A LOOK BACK AT THE SANDF EXPERIENCE AT THE RAND SHOW

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) once again captivated visitors at The Rand Show 2025, which took place at the Johannesburg Expo Centre from 17 to 21 April 2025.

A perennial favourite among showgoers, the SANDF’s presence was both moving and inspiring - offering a unique opportunity for the public to engage with our armed forces and experience the discipline, capability, and human stories behind the uniform.

This year, the SANDF delivered a full programme, with events and exhibitions that spanned both indoor and outdoor spaces.

Here’s what I experienced from the SANDF at The Rand Show 2025:

Indoor and Outdoor Static Exhibitions:
An impressive showcase of military vehicles, equipment, uniforms, and technology was on display. Knowledgeable SANDF communicators from various Services and Divisions manned the stands, making the exhibition an interactive and educational experience for visitors of all ages.

Capability Demonstration (VIP Visitors’ Day):
One of the show’s thrilling highlights was a live demonstration of operational readiness and military capability. The SANDF pulled out all the stops for this dynamic display, performed for special guests and dignitaries.

Wreath Laying and Candle Lighting Ceremony:
A solemn and heartfelt tribute took place to honour fallen heroes and those currently serving. This moving moment of remembrance was open to all attendees who wished to pay their respects.

Military Music Programme:
Throughout the week, various SANDF military bands performed live - blending musical excellence with military tradition and providing a rich auditory backdrop to the show.

"Flash Mob" Performances:
In a fun twist, military band flash mobs surprised and delighted the crowds with spontaneous, high-energy performances around the showgrounds.

Launch of the SANDF’s New Podcast: Defence in Focus:
The SANDF also launched a new podcast, offering fresh insight into its people, missions, and values - a modern platform helping South Africans stay connected to their defence force.

Arena Events and Closing Ceremony:
The week concluded with a celebratory certificate ceremony that recognised participation and excellence, bringing the SANDF’s powerful Rand Show programme to a fitting and memorable close.
