FIND LOVE ON THE LAWN AT NORTHWARDS WITH THE JOHANNESBURG HERITAGE FOUNDATION
Long before Johannesburg was a glittering metropolis of concrete and glass, it was a rough and ready mining camp fueled by gold and grit. In the late 19th century, fortune seekers from across the globe poured into the dusty Witwatersrand in search of fame and fortune. Many found both of these things, and that more elusive of treasures - love.
While commerce has always reigned supreme in the City of Gold, many of South Africa's most wonderful and enduring love affairs took root right here in the concrete jungle. This Valentine’s Day, the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation (JHF) invites you to step back in time and celebrate the softer side of our city’s history.
Join JHF for a Valentine’s Picnic under the majestic Himalayan Cedar trees on the sprawling lawns of Northwards mansion - once the home of the legendary José and John Dale Lace. As the afternoon shadows lengthen over the panoramic vista below, our expert storytellers will share seven of Johannesburg’s most iconic, enduring, and scandalous love stories.
Uncover the mystery of the eternal flowers on a soldier's grave in Ventersdorp, the truth behind the Dale Laces’ double wedding, how the defiant romance of Ruth and Seretse Khama reshaped a nation, and more.
For bookings, please visit Quicket or contact the JHF - mail@joburgheritage.org.za / 060-813-3239. All proceeds fund the activities of the JHF.
